Female broga teachers and instructors

Broga® is NOT just for men: how we’re breaking down gender barriers in yoga not rebuilding them!

Post by Matt Miller, Broga® Founder

Broga® is just for men, right!?

Broga instructors are men and women

Many Broga® instructors are women themselves!

This is definitely the top question asked about Broga® for those who haven’t already heard about it from a friend.  And it could not be further from the truth.  30% of Broga® teachers and participants are actually women, which is ironic, as that figure is the exact flip of yoga class participation by gender; overall under 30% yoga participation is male.

So “why do we need ‘man’ yoga, that sounds totally sexist if you ask me?”  This is a popular follow-up question by women and the answer is already built into the demographic figures mentioned above: by gender, less than 30% of participation in yoga classes is male.  Clearly men have not been getting the right message or feeling welcomed .

“That’s interesting but how does Broga® solve that problem other than just saying it in the name?” Broga® is much more than a cheeky name.  It embodies our entire ethos and practice.

  • It addresses the male sensibility of any workout or physical activity making you feel like you really pushed yourself to the limit.
  • Broga® doesn’t assume you are a bendy-Wendy type or even that you can touch your toes. From the very first class, it is accessible and scalable without ever making new participants feel like they are doing the remedial version B of what everyone else is up to .
Broga is not just for men

Broga isn’t exclusively for men, we’re about trying to even up the balance in yoga classes

  • Since the Broga® workouts are systematically organised by body part participants always know what they are getting into and can strategically plan the rest of their fitness for the week.
  • The language of Broga® is always anatomical and logically based even though the movements are solidly grounded in 3000 years of yoga practice. We promise you will never be asked to “breathe through your kidneys”, “open your heart” “look through your third eye” or “lift your pelvic floor”!
  • And finally though there is value and calm in solace. We aim to build a community and “bro”therly connection. Every Broga® class ends in participants interacting and helping each other do more than what they could ever do on their own.  We find this signature element an amazing way to be social-building and community-minded rather than the practice being entirely introspective and self-absorbed.
Broga power for men and women

Broga power!

In short, no one at Broga® is trying to alienate women, we love and encourage women in our classes! Not to mention that there are many women who actually want to build more strength, tone muscles and not just gracefully flow about and think esoterically of opening like a flower!

Teacher spotlight – William Fullerton

  1. Name, age, nationality?

William Brian Fullerton, 29 years old, British.

  1. Where do you currently live?

I live in Newtownabbey just 10 minutes from Belfast City Centre.

  1. How did you first hear about Broga®?

I first heard about Broga® when researching men’s yoga practice and became very interested after reading my first article. I was so keen to get involved in practicing yoga, but I was unable to find one that was going to suit my needs. After speaking with Matt Miller about the practice and the passion he had for it, it became almost contagious and I signed up for the next teacher training course.

  1. Can you remember your first experience of kicking some asana? What was that first lesson like?

My first experience of kicking some asana was when I attended the Broga® teacher training in London. I was a little shy and apprehensive at first in class, many thoughts went through my head and as I believed I was the least flexible in the class, I worried I’d snap in two! But boy I was wrong; from the word go I was put at ease and I did the work out, but not the kind I was used to, the Broga® class left me feeling stretched and relaxed at the same time. I was hooked!

  1. What made you want to teach Broga®?

It started with some interest in finding a yoga course that suited my needs as a fitness competitor, fitness instructor and coach. I wanted to develop my own training whilst using the knowledge I gained to help my personal training clients. After the course I was motivated to share my experiences in London and I wanted to start creating classes to share the practice in Northern Ireland/Ireland right away.

  1. What was the best part of the Broga® teacher training bootcamp?

It’s hard to say what the best part was as the teacher training was filled with many tasks and not to mention meeting a wide range off interesting people from all different backgrounds. However, the best part for me was the 10km run and where I was taken well out of my comfort zone and ended up coming in second place. It wasn’t a race, but I felt delighted as running wouldn’t be one of my strengths. I’m much happier with a set of dumbells or in a Warrior 3 pose.

  1. And the most challenging part of the bootcamp?

I found the swimming the most challenging. I had always found swimming difficult due to breathing, however after a few days of non stop Broga®, I was taught how to breath appropriately and the difference in my swimming ability was astonishing.

  1. You graduated in April 2015- how have things developed since graduating?

Since coming home to Northern Ireland after graduating I have started to do my homework and have developed my skills as in all aspects of class instructing, but mostly as a Broga® instructor. Due to the new skills I developed, I was offered a great job within Simply Class, Whiteabbey a gym that only employ the best instructors in Northern Ireland and it gave me such a boost, I was given a time slot of 8.15pm-9.15pm that for the gym was a hard time slot to fill in the past. With 10-15 people, all female attending before I took over, the change was enormous and I had booked out classes of 30 people with 10+ on the waiting list every week with 10-15 male attendees. Amazing to say the least. Now in January I have 3 permanent classes within Simply Class all doing well. I hope to hold inversion workshops soon and trialed two before Christmas with great feedback.

  1. Where do you see yourself in 3 years’ time?

3 years is a long time away, at the minute I’m settled with my job as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor within Simply Class. It’s hard to say, but one thing I know is that I love practicing Broga® and I hope to progress with the brand as it grows in the future.

  1. Which Broga® sequence is your favourite?

It has to be legs. I know not many people like leg day, but Broga® leg day is like no other.

And now for the fun part. Ten more ‘intimate’ questions!

  1. What would be your ideal menu, be it for breakfast, lunch or dinner?

I love my food, but if I could have anything, every day it would be poached eggs, brown toast and a nice strong blend of coffee. Lunch is always chicken, ham and cheese toastie (yum!). Dinner would always be pizza. I love pizza.

  1. And what would you drink alongside this menu?

I’m a child at heart – I love my apple and blackcurrant cordial.

  1. What would be the perfect way to spend a Saturday for you?

Get up, hit the gym and feel refreshed before getting ready and meeting friends or family I haven’t seen for a while. Of course some lunch would be involved.

  1. Do you have any nicknames, and if so, how did they come about?

Sometimes I’m called ‘Wonka” as in Willy Wonka. When I was younger I got called Willy a lot, as did anyone in Belfast who was named William, but as I got older I got Willy Wonka because of my love for sweets. (I have the biggest sweet tooth ever.)

  1. What album can’t you stop listening to right now?

I can’t stop listening to The Corrs new album ‘White Light’. I take so many fitness classes with hard, banging music that it’s great to put on something slower and smoothening.

  1. What is your take on the world, your motto?

Live life; you only get one!

  1. Where is the place you’re happiest in the world?

A place I’d say I am happiest most is very simple: In my own house, feet up in my living room, relaxing is just the greatest feeling.

  1. If you could have a plane ticket to anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Easy, New York City. I have been twice and would go back tomorrow; the place just fascinates me.

  1. What advice would you give the 15-year old you?

You’re still a kid, don’t grow up too fast.

  1. What is the achievement you are proudest of?

To date, it has to be my 1st fitness show where I placed 3rd in my category. It helped me to see that anything is achievable when you believe in it and work hard for it.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”9396″ img_size=”full” css=”.vc_custom_1454701451465{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-top-width: 7px !important;border-right-width: 7px !important;border-bottom-width: 7px !important;border-left-width: 7px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: contain !important;border-left-color: #ffffff !important;border-left-style: solid !important;border-right-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-style: solid !important;border-top-color: #ffffff !important;border-top-style: solid !important;border-bottom-color: #ffffff !important;border-bottom-style: solid !important;border-radius: 4px !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”9395″ img_size=”full” css=”.vc_custom_1454701496326{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-top-width: 7px !important;border-right-width: 7px !important;border-bottom-width: 7px !important;border-left-width: 7px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: contain !important;border-left-color: #ffffff !important;border-left-style: solid !important;border-right-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-style: solid !important;border-top-color: #ffffff !important;border-top-style: solid !important;border-bottom-color: #ffffff !important;border-bottom-style: solid !important;border-radius: 4px !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row seperator_indeed_locker=”” lk_t=”ism_template_1″ lk_io=”default” lk_dm=”0″ lk_thm=”0″ lk_tuo=”0″ lk_dt=” ” css=”.vc_custom_1452736085377{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 60px !important;background-color: #00ffff !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1452736207889{padding-top: 40px !important;}”]
